UDT's device, developed in collaboration with JPL, functions as a first line of defense against a biological attack with anthrax spores. The device continuously samples the air and uses heat to "pop" the spores thus releasing a chemical from within the bacterial spore, called dipicolinic acid (DPA). This molecule is unique to bacterial spores.
